Doug waited until the café was empty and Callie Ann had turned the sign off to walk across Market Street and beg to come in.
“We’re closed,” she said through the unopened door.
“Please let me explain.”
“No need. I never ask my customers to explain, only to pay for their order so I don’t have to send Uncle Lewis over to kill them, but in your case, I’ll make an exception! You just leave your address and I’ll send over Uncle Lewis without an order, now good night!” She smiled a big smile as she let the blinds down.
“Cal! Please!” He pleaded as the blinds flew up.
“And don’t call me Cal!”
The blinds dropped.
“Can I at least explain?” He yelled as a few onlookers passed by.
Doug wasn’t the best at making a spectacle of himself but he was doing quite well. The thought of this intriguing woman upset with him, even though she had a right, had kept him awake for many nights, including the nights he spent in the hospital after Julia applied her door prize to his face.
“The least you could do is talk to me after you tried to kill me!” He yelled as an elderly lady in a big green hat smiled.
“You should bring her flowers if she tried to kill you, sonny,” she advised and crossed the street.
“Kill you?” Callie Ann called from the upstairs window.
“Yes, but you’ll be glad to know I’m fine now,” he adjusted his baseball cap.
Callie Ann had never seen anyone look so sexy in a pair of jeans from an aerial view and it just made her more mad.
“I don’t care how you are!”
“That’s all you have to say?”
“Basically.” She shut the window.
